And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. (Luke 5:1-3)
#1 People Today Do Not Want to Hear
Churches are declining, and people are not interested in religion anymore. Right?
The people who pressed around Jesus to hear the word of God were no less sinful than the people who are alive today. All around the world you can find large groups of people coming together to hear the gospel message. Even in the United States Churches are experiencing growth as they show a willingness to meet people where they are instead of saying, “Here we are join us if you would like!”
#2 God Can Accomplish it on His Own
Why would God want to use me when He is God, and He can do whatever He wants?
In this passage of scripture we see that Jesus had a logistical problem with speaking to a crowd. Think of every live speaker you have ever listened to, and imagine that you had to listen to them from the back of a standing crowd where you could not even see them. Jesus could have simply risen into the air, or walked out onto the water if He had wanted to, but this would have distracted the crowd from His message. Would you be able to pay attention to what someone was saying if they were standing on water? God does not float down from heaven to spread the gospel message, because He does not want people to be focused on outward signs when there is such a great need for an inward change of heart.
#3 I Am too Busy
God would not want me to do anymore than I am doing. Right?
In this passage Jesus calls on a local business owner to assist Him with the sharing of His message. Simon chose to make his time and resources available to Jesus. Simon had worked all night without making any money, and was cleaning up to go home to rest, so he had an excuse to deny Jesus request, but he chose to help anyway. After Jesus is finished with His speech Simon is told to cast out his nets, and he brings in a catch that is so large it tears his nets, and requires two boats to bring it all in.
What excuse do you have for not using the things you have to help spread the God’s word?
