Byproduct of Learning and Employing the Scriptures Sincerely Each Day
But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. ( James 1:25 )
A Byproduct of Action Not Luck
Being blessed has nothing to do with luck. We need to remember that blessings do not come from the unknown God of the men of Athens(Acts 17:22-23). If blessings come from the only true God, the God of the Bible then we can learn how to obtain those blessings by studying the Bible. In other words we need to look at being blessed as a byproduct of our actions, and not an event of chance. Unfortunately our culture has come to think of luck and blessing as synonyms. If your boss offered a bonus to the person who sold the most product in a week, and the person who got the bonus ran through the halls screaming,” the boss just blessed me with this money,” wouldn’t you think that was an odd way of describing the bonus? You may think to yourself that he earned that money, he wasn’t just blessed with it. We almost think that it is a perversion to say that we have earned a blessing, how can such desperately wicked people like us, earn God’s blessings? This state of mind is the problem, and it keeps many of God’s children from experiencing His blessings.
Learning Helps You Avoid False Beliefs
Why should you listen to anything that I have to say about the teachings of the Bible? The simple answer is, you shouldn’t. This is where learning what the Bible teaches comes into play. With all of the different denominations, and theological stances how can anyone say that they know what is true and what is not? There have always been the religious elite that were in error because they leaned on man’s understanding of the scriptures (Matthew 22:29). The fact is that without the Holy Spirit it is impossible for a person to be able to properly understand the teachings of scriptures, and with the Holy Spirit we can study and understand the Bible’s teachings (1 Corinthians 2:12-14). So study the Bible, and when reading articles such as this one test what is being said here by what the Bible teaches. If this is contrary to scripture then you can throw it out. If it agrees with the teaching of scripture then you can count on it to be true. Too many people are not experiencing God’s blessings because they are trusting in false teachings about God’s Word.
The Bible is not a Book of Spells
One of the most damaging myths about scripture is that it has some magical power similar to reading the words from a spell book aloud, all you have to do is quote the Bible and you will be blessed! This is a lie. You can read, chant, or memorize the Bible all you want, but if you are not willing to employ its teachings in your life, then you are wasting your time. The point of being a doer of the word and not a hearer only is not to obtain salvation, because salvation is a gift of God not of works (Ephesians 2:8-9), the point is that those who know God will obey Him, and those who obey Him will be blessed by Him (John 14:15). It is important to remember that the Bible is not a book of incantations. In the same way that quoting scriptures without obeying them will not do any good, it is also true that becoming a Christian will not magically make you obedient. The Christian life is one of self-discipline, and of making the choice to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
This is why we must be sincere in our employing of the scriptures into our lives. Man judges the outward appearance, but God judges the inward man (1 Corinthians 4:5). If you want to be blessed by God it will serve you well to realize that you are much more likely to be blessed if you make a mistake while sincerely serving God, than if you do everything “right” while only trying to serve yourself. In other words if you want to be blessed you must put God first. This same concept applies to salvation as well. There were many times in my young life that I wanted to be saved because I wanted to escape Hell, or I hoped that God would fix issues in my life, but it was not until I realized that the gospel was about my surrendering to God’s plan for me, and not about God doing me a favor that I was saved. God knows your heart, and thinking that you can fool God into doing what you want Him to do is the most foolish thing that you could do.
Every Day there is no Other Way
Because of the fact that God knows your heart you must be willing to make obedience to the teachings of His Word an everyday choice. God is not going to be fooled by your toilet bowl promises. Many people have promised God that they will never drink again if they survive getting sick with their arms wrapped around the toilet. This has nothing to do with whether or not you make mistakes. We all make mistakes. We are however only fooling ourselves if we think we can trick God into blessing us when we have no intention of devoting our lives to Him. Grow in your relationship with God daily, and experience the full joy and freedom that comes from being a child of God.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. ( John 10:10)
