Refugees, War, and God’s Word

CAUTION

There are many people who are taking very judgmental attitudes towards those who would have our nation proceed with caution on the issue of refugees, but this is not a Biblical response. If I were to write “Robert’s Art of War” my first rule would be, if you do not know you are in a war you are going to lose. Okay so I’m completely unqualified to write that book but come on you can agree with me on that one. As Christians we are in a Spiritual war, and as a Country we are at war with a group of people who fight in the shadows. They will never come at us in head to head battle instead they will catch us sleeping and attack. The admonition found in scripture to not worry does not indicate that we should not use our ability to reason and make wise decisions. We are not to live in fear but I would not want to lose my ability to experience fear. Healthy fear allows us to proceed with caution.

COMPASSION

In the same manner those who want to rescue the hurting from oppression and poverty are not to be considered foolish as this is a good and godly thing to want to happen. If you have studied the Bible at all you know that God wants us to help those in need.

CONFORMITY

I see calls of unity that desire for one side to conform to the other but God can use each side to bring about he best possible solution. This is not to say that we ever abandon God’s Word for man’s thought but when God is clear about two issues in this case wisdom and charity we should work together. People are constantly throwing out Bible verses to defend their position but they are unwilling to do the work of applying the full teaching of God. Do I believe that Christians have the ultimate decision about this issue at this point? No I do not. However, whatever decisions are made we should be prepared to work together in reaching the lost and hurting whether they be here or there. Unity is found is God’s Word when we submit ourselves under God’s authority.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.(Philippians 4:6)
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:(1 Peter 5:8)
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.(James 1:27)
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.(Matthew 10:16)
