This Pastor Has ADD

I’m super pumped about football season. A couple of days ago I watched a 2015 Alabama highlight video with Eli Gold calling the plays. If you’re an Alabama fan you should watch that video. I got a major adrenaline rush. Watching football, especially college football, is one of my favorite things to do.

There are other things I enjoy. I enjoy a good book. I especially enjoy having the time to read or listen to a good book and finish it in two or three days. My ADD prevents me from really enjoying a book if I’ve got to spread it out too far. I’ll lose interest and find another one. Audio books are awesome. I listen to them at 2 and 1/2 speed. So finishing even a 20 hour book is easy to accomplish in two or three days. I like all different types of books. Mystery, educational, religious, philosophy, business, psychology. I saw a preview at the movie theater and I was excited because I was able to name the movie. It was “Girl on the Train.” From the preview I may not watch the movie until I can see it on Vid Angel, but the book was good.

I also enjoy movies. I like action, thriller, comedy, documentaries, westerns, even Kung Fu. If you haven’t seen the Ip Man series you should watch them. They’re excellent movies! They’re available on Netflix.

I like to go to the beach with Meredith and the kids. I don’t get to go often but I enjoy it. I love the mountains, especially in the fall. Drinking a cup of coffee, or hot chocolate, on a cool morning with a view of the mountains is one of my favorite things.

I love to laugh. Road trips are an excellent opportunity for laughter. I enjoy spending quality time with people. I enjoy a good serious, deep conversation about the big questions in life.

I’ve recently learned that it’s my ADD that affords me a very good since of humor. I get silly, dark, dry, or whatever kind of humor a person may have. This causes me to come off as strange or immature from time to time but I wouldn’t change it. Laughter is so good for you.

I enjoy all types of music. Yes even rap music. My ADD brain can’t figure out why people don’t enjoy all types of music. I did grow up in an eclectic household. My dad liked country. My mom liked classic rock. My older brother listened to heavy metal. And many of my friends listened to rap.

I’m not a super human person. I know no one thinks that I am. I do fear that people may think that I think that I am. I’m always posting my devotionals. Part of ADD is condensing thoughts. I can come off as judgmental or angry because my words are right to the point. I don’t make many apologies and I don’t try and consider how my words will make people feel. I have a point and I want to make it as quickly and bluntly as I can. It’s just how my brain is wired.

If you’ve met me in person you know that I’m just as dogmatic in person when making arguments. I have a point and I’m going to make it. I expect you to be able to make your point if you’re going to argue with me. That’s part of my ADD. It may sound like an excuse but if you have anyone in your family like this you may want to look into the science behind ADD. It’s not an excuse. It’s and actual thing. I don’t consider it to be a disability. It actually has some pretty awesome benefits. It does require a lot of work to fit into a non-ADD world, but once you know you have it, it’s worth the effort.

I’m just learning about the benefits and pitfalls myself. I’ve always been prone to making mistakes in writing, forgetting important things, being impulsive, having poor money management skills, forming addictions, and losing focus in conversations. People label you as dumb, immoral, uncaring, or lazy when you make these types of mistakes. If you suspect you or someone you love has ADD you should be tested immediately. Just knowing what’s going on gives a person with ADD a great deal of peace. They’ve developed brain scans that can actually pick up the difference in someone with ADD’s brain. Again being ADD also has it’s advantages. There are very successful people in all walks of life with ADD. There are many successful treatment options. I’m 38 and I wish I had known more about this when I was 18.

As a Christian I take full responsibility for any sins I’ve committed. As a human I now know that I’m particularly susceptible to certain sins. This helps me make wise decisions in my walk with Christ.

I read mostly Christian books. I listen to mostly Christian music. I watch all sorts of movies but I love my Vid Angel that takes out the ugly parts. I’m a sports fan and a nature fan. I like to kid around and laugh, but I keep it clean most of the time.

I’m not perfect. I’m not holier than thou. But I unashamedly love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I’m not trying to talk people into being boring. I’m not trying to take the fun out of life. But I am going to keep encouraging people to give more to Jesus every day. Live life. Enjoy life. Just don’t waste life. We’ve got this one chance to choose to serve Him. This one chance to show our appreciation for all that He’s done. He is worth the effort. Pray. Study His Word. Live His Word. Not matter what the world thinks. Jesus is Lord.

I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.
(Psalm 86:12)
